To be honest, all the songs blurred together. But the stage show was pretty fucking fantastic. The band was energetic (almost thought I was gonna get a foot in my lens) and the crowd was about as hardcore as you’re going to get for an anime convention (don’t shove meeeee, I have no deodorant on!). There was head banging and hair whipping and cute girls with sparkley light things waving around.

X Japan @ Roseland Ballroom 10/10/10

It was a surprisingly good show. I think that’s what most people forget about X Japan. Once you get past all the cocky bullshit, schedule changes, lack of new music and general hype, you remember that they’re really good performers. It helps that the audience is super into them (wouldn’t matter if they came out smelling like dog shit and 3 hours late). It helps that their stage setup was quite epic with billows of smoke that shot up like flames and laser lights stabbing into the air. The whole show did sound like one long power ballad, but oh well, at least they looked spiffy.

And the X Japan show at Roseland is an example on being prepared. The photo pit was completely FUBAR. There were about 15 photographers too many in there. I counted 6 point and shoots in the photo pit. Then there were the folks with their 18-55 lens who were completely unprepared for how very very tall the stage is at Roseland and how very very far away the band members are. I ended up shooting the majority of the show with a 70-200 2.8 Sigma. Notes on the Sigma, it’s a nice lens for the price. I still prefer the Canon version, less backfocus and better coatings to reduce orbs and flare.

h.Naoto Fashion Show @ Otakon 2010

The h.Naoto fashion show was long. I love his designs, but no matter how slowly you make your models trudge down the runway, most folks are too far away to notice the details that really make h.Naoto’s designs so fantastic. His little details, like the patterns on a shirt or the tiny buttons down a coat, are meticulous and symbolic.

I got there late, so this may not be all the designs he showed. There were two videos for the Hangry & Angry sub-line and Sixh. Both lines are basically the same concept of music and fashion melding together, intertwined so much that one can’t tell which influences the other and vice versa. They were both a little boring and not up to par with the work that went down the runway.
